FULTON -- After surviving dreary conditions that shortened the tournament to a single round Tuesday, William Woods and Columbia College were forced back onto the 10th hole at Tanglewood for a tiebreaker to declare a tournament winner after matching 289 (+1) team scores.
The Cougars eked out a team win, but Woods claimed three of the top five spots on the individual leaderboard.
Aiden Asby and Spencer Worley tied for third with a 70 (-2), with the former earning the win on a scoreboard playoff that went to the sixth handicap hole. Asby carded a birdie on the par-five 13th, with Worley carding a bogey.
As a team, Woods finished 12 strokes clear of NCAA Division II squad Lincoln and 20 clear of University of Dubuque (NCAA Div. III). Individually, Brayden Buffington rounded out the top five in the tournament with an even-par 72, a stroke ahead of Lincoln's Austin Shoemaker.
On the women's side, William Woods finished fifth with a team score of 349 (+61), with Maria Ortiz Rozo ending the two-day event in a five-way tie for fourth with a 78 (+6).
After allowing three hours of play on Monday in steady rain, the greens at Tanglewood finally succumbed as standing water forced golfers into the clubhouse. After an hour of discussion, the decision was made to postpone in hopes that the sunnier weather forecast for Tuesday would hold.
Unfortunately, even without Monday's steady rain, play on Tuesday resumed under full cloud cover and howling winds, with survival becoming the goal for players.
The Owls hit the road to Walnut Ridge, Ark., for the Williams Baptist Invitational next Monday and Tuesday.
